Baked Ziti Recipe

This quick and easy basic baked ziti recipe is the perfect mid-week no-fuss companion. This recipe freezes really well and is ideal to heat up during evenings where time is short.

Many people have asked me what baked ziti is. I always tell them it is a combination between lasagne and macaroni and cheese, but without the fuss. Beef lasagne and macaroni and cheese call for ground beef as the go-to meat, whereas classic baked ziti calls for Italian sausage.

There are many variations of baked ziti floating around on the Internet and recipe books and other forms of print. This is a basic baked ziti recipe, but you can adjust it to your liking, using either sausage or ground beef, or other types of cheese.

This recipe is a big hit and very popular on social media. If you are new to baked ziti, we recommend you try this one first, then later play around and try different variations of meat and other ingredients.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F)
  2. Cook the pasta in salted water until al dente, according to the packaging instructions
  3. Drain under cold water and toss with olive oil
  4. In a frying pan, over medium heat, heat a little olive oil and add the sausage and cook until browned. Add the onions and cook until soft and glossy. Add the garlic, basil, Italian seasoning, and red chili flakes and stir well to combine. Simmer for 5 minutes
  5. Prepare an ovenproof baking dish with cooking spray and spread a thin layer of the sauce in the bottom. Spread a few dollops of the ricotta cheese evenly over the bottom. Ladle a spoonful of sauce into the cooked pasta and stir to mix well. Add the pasta to the baking dish. Pour the remaining sauce over the pasta and add the remaining ricotta cheese in even dollops over the surface. Sprinkle the Parmesan and mozzarella cheese over the surface
  6. Place in the oven and bake, uncovered until the top becomes golden brown. About 25 minutes. Cool for a few minutes and serve hot. Enjoy!
