This bread recipe is versatile. You can use this recipe to bake two variations of bread, either white bread or brown bread. You can also adopt this bread recipe by adding roasted pumpkin seeds, before baking the bread. Suggested you use the brown bread variation of this bread recipe.


My gran used to use this traditional bread recipe to bake brown and white bread. It was so popular, kids from school used to come by her house to enjoy a slice of freshly baked bread spread with fresh farm butter. My mom has told me this story many times, but I always pretend that it is the first time I have heard it. It sounds better when she talks about the bread recipe than my imagination could tell the same story.


This bread recipe is quick and easy to prepare. It bakes within 25 minutes. Perfect for working-class individuals with limited time on their hands. I have seen bread recipes that take hours to bake. We just do not have that kind of time anymore. Unless you are a stay-at-home parent, of course.


This easy bread recipe is also the ideal recipe to get your kids involved in the kitchen and teach them how to bake bread, or as a basis to bake other things.

I guess you could also call this a farm style bread recipe

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C. Beat the water, milk, eggs, yeast, and salt in a large mixing bowl
  2. Stir in 4 cups of flour
  3. Leave for 10 minutes until blisters form on the surface of the bread dough
  4. Pour the mixture into a greased bread tin and leave on top of the stove, or another warm area, to let the dough rise to a level with the top of the bread tin
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes at 190 °Celsius
  6. Test by inserting a skewer into the baked bread. If the skewer comes out clean, the bread is baked through.
