Easy Homemade Falafel Recipe
This homemade falafel recipe brings back good memories. I remember working as a waiter at the time when I finished my studies. Although I loved the restaurant I worked at, there was a restaurant I even loved better, called Mivami.
It was situated in the heart of the busy Sandton metropolis and served Mediterranean and middle eastern style dishes, but best of all, was the falafel on the menu. Never have I thought that the direction I was studying for and meeting the love of my life, would lead me to this webpage. My own popular homemade falafel recipe.
Even more peculiar is the nickname I gave to my wife along the way, chickpea. She loves the nickname and because she is a chef, I guess it is quite fitting. My darling wife has helped me in every way to perfect this easy homemade falafel recipe and turn it into the popular recipe it has become.
This falafel recipe has featured in a few different glam and food magazines, on TV, as well as this popular website, called The Cooking Cat. I will not go as far as to call this falafel recipe our flagship of recipes, but it is really popular, all over the world.

Directions
- Combine the chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cumin, coriander, flour, and salt and pepper in a food processor. Season to taste with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Process until the mixture is coarse, not smooth.
- Using your hands, form the coarse mixture into falafel balls about 4 cm in diameter, squeezing to compact. Place in the refrigerator while the oil heats up
- In a saucepan, heat enough canola oil for shallow frying. Test the heat with a drop of cold water. If the oil sizzles and pops, the temperature is perfect for shallow frying
- Fry the falafel balls until golden brown on all sides. Transfer to a paper towel to dry
- Preparing the Yogurt Sauce In a mixing bowl, whisk the yogurt, lemon juice, oil, and dill together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Preparing the Tahini Sauce In a mixing bowl, whisk the tahini, garlic, lemon juice, and warm water together. Season with salt. For a thinner sauce, add a bit more warm water.
- Serving the Falafels Serve the falafels in pita with lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumber and drizzle with the tahini and yoghurt sauce. Enjoy!
