Pickled Fish Recipe

I first discovered this easy homemade pickled fish recipe when I moved down to Cape Town from Johannesburg. Pickled fish is a well-known dish enjoyed in the Western Cape over Easter and other religious holidays.

Pickled fish is easy to prepare and tasty. I love braaing snoek and consider myself being pretty good at it. Naturally, I get many requests for fish recipes and this pickled fish recipe is one of them.

It took me a while to perfect this pickled fish recipe and seeing that we have many friends from different cultures I tried out different recipes until I got the thumbs up from everyone who tried this recipe.

The time has come to publish this pickled fish recipe and I would love to know what you think of this pickled fish recipe. You can also take a snapshot and tag us on Instagram @cookingcatdotcom

Thanks and happy Easter and pickled fish eating.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon olive oil and sauté the onion until soft and glossy. Add the garlic, ginger, and spices and fry until fragrant
  2. Add the vinegar and sugar and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer for 15 minutes
  3. Meanwhile, dust the fish pieces with the flour and share off any excess flour. In a separate saucepan over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon olive oil and fry the fish until slightly browned. Set aside and allow to cool. Add a layer of fish to a sterilized glass jar or plastic container. Pour a little of the hot sauce over until covered. Continue by layering the remaining fish and covering with the hot sauce, until all the fish is covered. Allow to cool, then serve. Enjoy!
