Blueberry pie was introduced to the United States by settlers from Europe and Scandinavia and became very popular in all states, from where this popular dish spread to the rest of the world.

For reasons unknown to us, blueberry pie is especially popular in the state of Maine. In 2011, the Maine State Legislature designated blueberry pie, made with wild Maine Blueberries, as the official state dessert. Wild blueberries are harvested from late July to early September in Maine.

Blueberry pie can be enjoyed hot or cold, making it perfect for any season. When served hot, whipped cream is normally added and served with the pie. When served cold, maple and vanille ice cream is normally served with the pie. Blueberry berry is easy to prepare and a great mid0afternoon snack.

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Butter a 9-inch (21 cm) pie plate lightly. Pour in the blueberries, forming a peak in the centre. Dust with the flour, then add the sugare and dot evenly with butter.
  3. Roll out the pastry thin, and a bit larger than the pie dish, and cover the berries with the crust. Trim away the excess pastry. Flute the edges, and cut pie vents into the top.
  4. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg yolk. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350°F (160°C) and continue to bake until the crust is golden brown, about 35 minutes longer.
